Fukushima nuclear power plant issue

by Moins 2023. 7. 4.

Based on information available until September 2021, I will provide an overview of the release of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant and the government's position. However, please note that the following information is based on the situation as of June 2023.

The Fukushima nuclear power plant experienced a major accident in March 2011 as a result of a severe earthquake and tsunami. This accident led to the generation of contaminated water due to the melting of the reactor cores and fuel rods, containing radioactive substances. The contaminated water originated from either the cooling of the reactor or contact with groundwater.

Initially, some of the contaminated water was stored within the plant premises and later underwent purification treatment to reduce the radiation levels to safe standards. However, the volume of contaminated water at the Fukushima plant continued to increase. In response to this, the Japanese government announced plans in 2020 to install additional tanks within the plant premises for storing the contaminated water.

However, in April 2021, the Japanese government decided to proceed with the release of the contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. According to the planned release, starting from 2023, the water will undergo purification treatment to meet international standards for radiation levels and will be discharged into the ocean. The government stated that this decision was made based on assessments of the safety and environmental impact on Fukushima residents, as well as consideration of international standards and regulations.

This decision has sparked international controversy, with concerns and opposing views raised by some countries, local communities, and environmental organizations. The Japanese government has pledged to comply with international standards, ensure transparency, and provide monitoring as part of the plan for the water release.

However, it is important to note that the current situation and the government's stance as of June 2023 may require verification of the latest information. Updated information can be obtained from announcements by the Japanese government or international institutions, as well as from ongoing developments and discussions related to the issue.
